Reflexology is a practice and an art based on the premise that there are microcosms (mini maps) of our entire body represented reflexively in our hands and feet.
By applying technique and stimulating those reflex points the practitioner can help break up patterns of stress , increase circulation and therefore restoring the body's natural equilibrium.
This practice can be dated back to the Ancient Egypt, China and India and has been introduced in United States in 1913 thanks to William H. Fitzgerald, M.D. (1872-1942), a doctor specialized in ear, nose and throat therapy. Dr Fitzgerald developed the notion of "zone therapy" and divided the body into ten vertical zones that were alleged to correspond to the fingers and toes.
Reflexology was further developed by Eunice D. Ingham (1899-1974), a nurse and physiotherapist, who, in the 1930s and 1940s developed Fitzgerald’s maps even more as to include specific reflex points. It is the Ingham method that the modern reflexologists use.
